During the day, the sofa's light and airy design makes it an eye-catcher in a small space, while at night it instantly transforms into two spacious beds (2 x 85 x 200 cm) without any complicated mechanisms.

The clever design of the Kaiku sofa bed includes a storage space hidden in the back cushions, where you will find all the necessary bedding for two people: 2 blankets, 2 mattress covers and 4 pillows. This makes it easy to host guests, as everything is always easily accessible without the need for a separate storage space.

The sofa's frame is made of waxed pine for durability and sturdiness. Firm foam cushions ensure comfortable seating. Removable fabric covers make maintenance easy and prolong the sofa's life.

Where the idea for Kaiku sofa bed came from?

"This story started out pretty much on the basis of the materials. We have a lot of pine forests in Finland, but we prefer to make cellulose from them rather than furniture. I wanted to show that pine can be used for modern design in Finnish homes. When I started designing, I varied the concept and structure of the sofa beds I had designed before."

Designing the Kaiku sofa bed

"An echo of my childhood is the motto of the story. Looking back can sometimes inspire you, if it's far enough away. Pine was just that for me. As a tree, it's a bit more colourful and twiggy, but now it's more sophisticated again. The design wasn't easy, as the structures have to be made a bit thicker. Now my sofa bed family has a new member, while retaining the excellent qualities of its 'grandparents'."

"The sofa bed is undeniably a little more like the sofas of the 60s and 70s that have been forgotten as heirlooms in summerhouses. It may be that the sofa bed works better in a cottage or sauna environment than in a city apartment. And why not in modern detached houses, which are now often built of wood. It could be used in loft-like rooms that are being renovated in old houses, and especially in rooms where guests need to be able to stay occasionally."

A story behind the Kaiku sofa bed

"The sofa bed was launched at Habitare design fair 2022. We were a little nervous about how it would be received, as pine furniture hadn't been around much lately. The nervousness was all for nothing. Older people who experienced the pine boom in interiors 40-50 years ago said it was nice to see pine coming back. Younger people wondered what this wonderful new-looking tree was..."

Manufacturing the Kaiku sofa bed

We have the wood and upholstery parts of the sofa bed made by two different contract manufacturers. The method is a combination of serial production and craftsmanship. Machines are needed to make the wooden parts, but the finishing is a collaboration between the human eye and hand. All the upholstery is handmade. To guarantee quality, our manufacturer makes all the bedding in-house.
