Where the idea for Limi chair came from?

"I've always been interested in finding new things to do with wood. Wooden furniture is often perceived as heavy, which is not always good, especially in small spaces. Wood as a material is perceived as very two-dimensional and rectangular. My mission was to create something light and soft for Finnish homes."

Designing the Limi chair

"The veneer form pressing technique makes lightweight structures out of wood, but they are two-dimensional and I wanted to avoid that. I thought about how to make the chair three-dimensional and soft. I sketched cup shapes, where the seat is made of two parts that overlap. The end result was surprisingly light and soft. I was able to add a touch of lightness to the overall look with a slender metal leg."

"The chair is physically and visually very light, but still counts as a wooden chair. Its appearance changes in a fun way when viewed from different angles. The cupped shape makes it comfortable to sit on and the slight flexibility adds to the feeling of softness. The chair doesn't fill the space, but allows it to breathe. A dining group is often placed in front of a large window and one doesn't want to block the view with a heavy dining table and chair."

A story behind the Limi chair

"I had been thinking about the idea of a chair for a while. I hadn't found the time to study the shape and structure. One day I was at home with the man flu and needed something to do. I started making several life-size cardboard models of the seat. My wife Arja came home in the evening and I presented her with what I had achieved. The next day I made the drawings on the computer and the work started to move forward."

"You can easily order this chair from our online shop and have it delivered to your home free of charge. It comes in either natural oak or black stained birch. We aim to keep this chair in stock at all times, so delivery is quick. If you have any questions about delivery or anything else, please send us an email or give us a call."

Manufacturing the Limi chair

We have the chair made by our contract manufacturer. The method is a combination of serial production and craftsmanship. Machines are needed to make the wooden parts, but the finishing is a collaboration between the human eye and hand. The wood material is carefully chosen to suit the chair.

Appreciated by professionals

The chair has been awarded with the international GOOD DESIGN award. The jury was impressed by the chair's lightness and its atypical design for wood, which pushes the limits of the material. It also brings new innovations to the veneer form pressing technique.
