Where the idea for Sopiva wall shelf came from?

"Our ON2 Wood sofa bed has a hole in the headboard and back, giving it a distinctive and light look. Because the sofa is so popular, there is a large pile of plywood pieces the size of the hole left over from the production of the sofa every year. It would be a shame to throw them away, so Tapio was given the usual brief: "Design something with them!"

Designing the Sopiva wall shelf

"The scrap pieces of plywood were just the right size for the shelves and the shape of a small shelf began to take shape naturally, first in my head and then in the sketches. The starting point was to create a solution that could be easily and discreetly attached to the wall, providing a simple background for a variety of items in a variety of spaces. After 3D modelling, a few prototypes and testing, the job was done."

Manufacturing the Sopiva wall shelf

We manufacture the shelf with two different contract manufacturers. One specialises in metal products and the other in wooden furniture, especially veneered furniture. The method is a combination of serial production and craftsmanship. Machines are used to make the parts, but the finishing is a collaboration between the human eye and hand.
