Where the idea for Renki L shelf set came from?

"The production of our sofa beds leaves behind approximately one metre of oak wood scraps. It didn't feel right to waste them, as they are high-quality solid wood. We wondered what we could do with them. Of course, because of the size, a miniature set was a natural choice. Tapio set out to develop the series from this starting point."

Designing the Renki L shelf set

"The starting point was clearly material-based, because the scraps were the basis of everything. Our collection lacked simple small shelves and a coat rack that would nicely complement our range for different spaces. After several sketches and prototypes, the minimalist series began to take shape, first as two multipurpose wall shelves, and then I used their parts in the coat rack and mirror."

"The L shelf is quite versatile. It can be used on its own as a focal point in the interior, or it can be used to create a set of several shelves. The S shelf is home to individual objects, but why couldn't one mount several of them on the wall as well. A coat rack and mirror work well in small spaces. It's hard to pinpoint a single room where the Renki range works best, as it works in every room of the home, from the sauna dressing room to the living room."

A story behind the Renki L shelf set

"The products in the range are made from scrap wood from the sofa beds. We calculate the carbon footprint of the sofa bed and this includes a certain percentage of waste material. This means that the carbon footprint of the products in the range is zero for the material because it is already included in the final product. The responsible concept of the range attracted worldwide attention and was awarded the prestigious GREEN GOOD DESIGN award."

The entire Renki range consists of four products: two wall shelves of different sizes, a coat rack and a mirror. We aim to keep this shelf in stock at all times, so delivery is quick. Manufacturing the Renki L shelf set

We have the shelf made by our contract manufacturer. The method is a combination of serial production and craftsmanship. Machines are needed to make the wooden parts, but the finishing is a collaboration between the human eye and hand. The wood material is carefully chosen to suit this shelf.
